Merchant Navy for Commerce and Arts Students: What You Can Join in 2026

Yes, there is a way to sea after commerce or arts, but it is not the officer-degree route most websites talk about. Here is what is genuinely open to you, what is not, and why, from the official 2026 rules.

The Short Answer

Most merchant navy officer courses straight after Class 12 need Physics, Chemistry and Maths. That is a rule, not an opinion. But commerce and arts students still have real routes, and one of them leads to a ship within a year.

Open to you after Class 12

GP Rating (deck and engine crew), Saloon Rating (catering crew) and shore careers through IMU's BBA programmes. Any stream can apply, subject to marks, age and medical rules.

Not open after commerce or arts

B.Sc Nautical Science, DNS and B.Tech Marine Engineering need 60% in PCM. GME needs an engineering degree, and ETO an electrical or electronics qualification.

Your Real Options, One by One

1. GP Rating

The most direct way to sea for commerce and arts students. SCI MTI's 2026 notice accepts Class 12 in any stream with 40%. DGS Order 12 of 2026 raised the upper age limit for approved GP Rating courses to 28 from 1 August 2026.

2. Saloon Rating

Cooks and stewards are part of every crew. It is a respected rating-level route, and the eligibility is set in each approved institute's notice.

3. A Shore Career

IMU's BBA in Maritime Logistics, and its BBA in Logistics, Retailing and E-Commerce, accept any stream with 50%. They lead to port, logistics and shipping business careers, not to sea.

4. Switching to Science Later

IMU accepts Class 12 from boards including NIOS, but it needs PCM averaging 60%. Some sponsors are stricter: GEIMS's DNS notice says candidates educated through NIOS or distance mode are not eligible. Ask in writing before you spend a year on this.

5. Rating to Officer, Over Time

After sea service, some ratings sit for officer exams. SCI MTI's GP Rating route, for example, leads to the near-coastal NWKO exam. Read how the GP Rating to officer path works before you plan on it.

A Word to Commerce Students and Their Parents

Too many commerce students hear “anyone can join the merchant navy” and only find out about the PCM rule at the very last step. If that has happened to you, it is a hard moment, and it is not your fault.

So please hear this early. The officer degree route needs science. The rating route does not, and it is a real job at sea, with real pay and real responsibility. Many people build long careers from it. Choose it because it suits you, not because someone sold it as a shortcut to captain.

How We Help Commerce and Arts Students

Our GP Rating entrance coaching (January 2027 batch) costs ₹35,000, including a non-refundable ₹2,500 registration fee. Installments are available, and a 10% discount applies for students whose father is in the Army or is a farmer, and for students from a single-parent family. See the full fee structure.
